Chennai Platform for Action
Description
The Chennai Platform for Action was developed to enhance the contribution of plant genetic resources to meeting the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), especially to reducing hunger and poverty. The action plan was developed by participants at an international consultation, organized by Bioversity International, along with the Global Facilitation Unit for Underutilized Species and the M.S. Swaminathan Research Foundation on 'The Role of Agricultural Biodiversity in Achieving the Millennium Development Goal of Freedom from Hunger and Poverty', held in Chennai, India, in April 2005. The Consultation brought together some 100 policy-makers and experts with varied backgrounds from 25 countries around the world to formulate approaches to maximize the contribution of agricultural biodiversity to reducing hunger and poverty.

CBD's Cross-cutting Initiative on Biodiversity for Food and Nutrition
Description
Bioversity International, in collaboration with the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has undertaken the Cross-cutting Initiative on Biodiversity for Food and Nutrition. Subsequent to a Global Stakeholder Meeting and other consultations to exchange experiences and take stock of steps undertaken as a guide for laying out options, the initiative was adopted at the Eighth Conference of the Parties to the CBD. These three partners continue to work together to coordinate and undertake the implementation of the initiative. Bioversity's research programs make important contributions to this effort.

Neglected and Underutilized Species
Description
Global diets have become increasingly dependent on only a handful of crops, yet surveys indicate there are over 7 000 plant species across the world that are cultivated or harvested from the wild for food. These neglected and underutilized species (NUS) play a crucial role in the food security, income generation and food culture of the rural poor. Evaluation of nutrient composition is one important component of the second phase of the NUS project in collaboration with IFAD.

Managing Agricultural Biodiversity for Better Nutrition and Health, Improved Livelihoods and More Sustainable Production Systems in Sub-Saharan Africa
Description
Ongoing research in Kenya, South Africa and Benin explores new interventions that draw on local ecosystems and human resources as the basis for sustainable solutions to hunger and malnutrition and the rise of chronic disease in sub-Saharan Africa. This program appraises the linkage of ecosystem degradation to health of rural and urban populations, as well as the actual and potential contribution of local biodiversity to nutrition and health. It endeavors to mobilize biodiversity resources and biodiversity stakeholders together with local communities and draws on expertise in health, agriculture, environment and development in order to achieve transdisciplinary strategies for better health. In recognizing the importance of markets for income generation and making foods of nutritional quality available to consumers, the project works to build rural-urban linkages for sustainable use of agricultural biodiversity.

Conservation, Characterization and Evaluation for Nutrition and Health of Vegetatively Propagated Crop Collections at the Vavilov Institute
Description
Plant diversity offers healthy and high-quality food, creates new economic opportunities for farmers and maintains healthy agricultural ecosystems. In Russia the N.I. Vavilov Institute of Plant Industry (VIR) which holds one of the largest and most historically important germplasm collections worldwide is responsible for conservation, study and use of plant genetic resources In collaboration with VIR and the Centre de Recherche Public Gabriel Lippmann (CRPGL), Luxembourg, Bioversity is evaluating and characterizing the nutritional potential of small fruits and potatoes and ensuring their safe conservation.

Plant Genetic Diversity Indicators for Nutrition: Field Trial in Bangladesh
Description
As a practical application of the theoretical linkages between agro-biodiversity and nutrition, this study built upon concepts such as significant nutritional differences between varieties and the importance of access to diverse plant crops for household food security. The study incorporated two indicators of plant genetic resources into an existing IFPRI household food and nutrition survey.
