ICARDA Strategies in Food Legume Improvement Research: Present status and Future Implications for Ethiopia

Description
At the 2nd National Workshop on Food and Forage Legumes in 2003, ICARDA discussed its work to improve food legume crops, in close collaboration with Ethiopia's national program. Through continued cooperation, the country has developed improved varieties and production packages, exchanged substantial amount of germplasm and scientific information, and has received support in human resources development.

Title
Diversification and Sustainable Intensification of Production Systems (DSIPS)

Description
Livestock and crops are the primary resources from which rural populations living in non-tropical dry areas, within developing countries, derive their livelihoods. Increase demand for agricultural products has led to opportunities for these farmers to enter into the commercial market. Yet, low input use, poor management, and the lack of diversity, all characteristics of traditional productions systems continue to hinder their attempts to enter the local and export markets. The need for innovative technologies, institutions and policies is great. ICARDA's DSIPS program aims to strengthen production systems by promoting higher efficiency, diversifying the flora and fauna on farms, and building capacity at the local level in order to increase income, improve health, and combat poverty.

Title
Contribution of Barley and Lentil Consumption to Iron and Zinc Intake

Description
Barley grain accounts for over 60% of the food of the people in the highlands of Ethiopia, for whom it is one of the main sources of calories. In such areas, barley is the only source of food, home drinks, animal feed and cash income. ICARDA is undertaking this study in Ethiopia in cooperation with HarvestPlus in order to assess the nutritional aspects of barley and lentil varieties consumed by the rural communities and generate pertinent information related with the consumption of the two crops and its contribution to Iron and Zinc.

Analysis of Nutrition Across Different Natural Resource Endowments and Agricultural Systems in the Dry Areas: the Case of El Bab District in Syria

Description
This on-going study by ICARDA is collecting anthropometric measurements of children and iron level measurements of mothers and children in about 500 rural households that are living in 5 different agro-ecological zones with different natural and agricultural resource endowments. The study will determine the incidence of children in these different systems and determine the role agricultural diversification and income plays in human nutrition.

Title
Improving Yield Potential and Nutritional Quality of Grasspea for Dry Areas

Description
ICARDA is placing special emphasis on improving the grasspea, a popular food and feed crop in Asia and African countries, using the biodiversity available in the genetic resources, aiming at improving its yield potential and nutritional quality of the grain. One decade of ardent research efforts at ICARDA to produce high yielding drought tolerant grass pea seeds safe for human consumption for poor farmers in drought prone areas in Asia and Africa resulted in the release of two improved varieties, Waise in Ethiopia and Ali-Bar in Kazakhstan.

Title
Biofortified Barley and Lentil Varieties to Combat Micronutrient Malnutrition

Description
ICARDA has a mandate for the global improvement of barley and lentil, two typical crops of less-favored, low input, stressful environments. ICARDA is presently working on the development of micronutrient-dense barley and lentil varieties that, together with strategies for fast adoption by the farmers, will supply more micronutrients in those areas where barley and lentil are already in the food systems. Both conventional and molecular breeding strategies are employed to achieve the goal of the project.

Title
Rebuilding Agriculture in Afghanistan

Description
ICARDA leads the CGIAR consortium to rebuild agriculture in Afghanistan, where agricultural production capacity and food security were greatly damaged from war and drought. One topic addressed by the program is the extremely high infant and maternal death rates, partly due to poor nutrition. Alternative crops and cropping systems are being developed to provide improved nutrition for mothers and children as well as higher incomes and new markets for cash-starved Afghan farmers.
