Title
Food Safety Laboratory at ICRISAT

Description
ICRISAT has established an independent Food Safety Laboratory (FSL) to facilitate testing of a wide range crops, commodities, processed food and feed samples for mycotoxin contamination. The facility primarily uses ELISA-based methods for mycotoxin testing, which is very economical and thus the cost of analysis per sample will be cheap, making it affordable for many stakeholders to use this facility. In addition to food and feed safety testing, the FSL provides training in food safety analysis, provide consultation in research and development to food and feed industry and diagnostic reagents.

Title
Aflatoxins: Stakeholders Meeting to Form Consortium of Partners

Description
The objective of this conference was to building a strong partnership for addressing issues of aflatoxin contamination. As aflatoxin contamination can occur at different stages, the need for involvement of everyone in the production and utilization chain was stressed. In order to ensure follow-up and implementation of research findings, the involvement of policy makers was identified as necessary.

Turkey Wheat Improvement Project

Description
ICRISAT and CIMMYT are working together to help rural farming communities that depend on wheat for food and income through wheat improvement research. This project works to address major regional issues such as the precarious livelihoods of winter wheat producers and options for improvement; the urgent need to prevent disease epidemics in an environmentally responsible way; the complex soil health problems that reduce wheat yields; and the non-chemical control of Sunn pest, an insect that drains the nutritional and economic value out of wheat.

Partnerships and Ongoing Work on HIV/AIDS

Description
ICRISAT has initiated collaboration with the SIWA programme (WARDA) in the mainstreaming of HIV/AIDS into ICRISTAT's research for itsdevelopment agenda. In addition, ICRISTAT is the implementing partner of an IFPRI-funded HIV/AIDS project in MALAWI. The project is a component of the broader IFPRI-coordinated RENEWAL project. The objective is to understand the impact of HIV/AIDS on the inter- and intra-generational flows of information and local knowledge relating to genetic resources utilized for food security, and to identify new options to enhance access to agricultural knowledge and information by those affected by HIV/AIDS.

Biofortification

Description
ICRISAT's biofortification program aims to help developing countries attain food security and reduce poverty and malnutrition. Special emphasis is placed on increasing the micronutrient content of five crops: sorghum, pearl millet, groundnut, pigeonpea and chickpea, that are particularly important in the diets of the poor in the semi-arid tropics.

Title
Aflatoxin Contamination

Description
ICRISAT has been addressing problems of high exposure to aflatoxins; toxic, teratogenic and immunosuppressive substances produced when toxigenic strains of certain fungi grow on groundnuts. High percentages of the populations of several countries in Asia and Africa have been exposed to the toxins. Aflatoxin management at ICRISAT includes strategies to promote host-plant resistance, biological control, integrated management, public awareness and development of affordable diagnostic tools most essential for monitoring contamination in food and feed. In addition to groundnut, aflatoxin management programmes at ICRISAT cover important staple and high value crops such as maize, pistachio, chillies.
