Understanding the Links between Agriculture and Health
Description
The 2020 Panel Discussion was held on May 15, 2006 at IFPRI, Washington DC. The objective was to discuss how linkages between agriculture and health work, where the opportunities for joint action lie, what the impediments are that need to be overcome, and how to strengthen synergies between agriculture and health and promote closer coordination.

Food and Water Safety
Description
Food and water safety concerns directly affect the wellbeing of the poor both as food producers and consumers. Consumption of unsafe water continues to be one of the major causes of preventable death and disease, with an estimated 2.2 million deaths each year from diarrhea alone, mostly children. IFPRI's research program on this topic focuses on the cost to smallholders of complying with increased food safety requirements, public-private partnerships to ensure the delivery of safe food; understanding the source and the socio-economic impact of foodborne disease and plant and animal diseases, identifying cost-effective control strategies for minimizing these diseases, and designing decision tools to aid policy makers, and the relationship between water quality and food security and how this relationship can be influenced, through policies, technologies, and investments, to enhance food security, reduce poverty, and improve rural livelihoods.

Food Safety Laboratory at ICRISAT
Description
ICRISAT has established an independent Food Safety Laboratory (FSL) to facilitate testing of a wide range crops, commodities, processed food and feed samples for mycotoxin contamination. The facility primarily uses ELISA-based methods for mycotoxin testing, which is very economical and thus the cost of analysis per sample will be cheap, making it affordable for many stakeholders to use this facility. In addition to food and feed safety testing, the FSL provides training in food safety analysis, provide consultation in research and development to food and feed industry and diagnostic reagents.

Aflatoxins: Stakeholders Meeting to Form Consortium of Partners
Description
The objective of this conference was to building a strong partnership for addressing issues of aflatoxin contamination. As aflatoxin contamination can occur at different stages, the need for involvement of everyone in the production and utilization chain was stressed. In order to ensure follow-up and implementation of research findings, the involvement of policy makers was identified as necessary.

Aflatoxin Contamination
Description
ICRISAT has been addressing problems of high exposure to aflatoxins; toxic, teratogenic and immunosuppressive substances produced when toxigenic strains of certain fungi grow on groundnuts. High percentages of the populations of several countries in Asia and Africa have been exposed to the toxins. Aflatoxin management at ICRISAT includes strategies to promote host-plant resistance, biological control, integrated management, public awareness and development of affordable diagnostic tools most essential for monitoring contamination in food and feed. In addition to groundnut, aflatoxin management programmes at ICRISAT cover important staple and high value crops such as maize, pistachio, chillies.
